Useful Information for Genealogy

On this page you will find several directories of trades that my Ancestors have worked at. I have found direcories invaluable when doing research for my family history. Once or twice I have even stumbled upon a member of my family that I didn't even know existed before, and I was able to add him and his family to my own family tree. Using Directories to find out about your ancestors hsitory is an excellent way of finding out what they might have been up to between the census'. It can also give clues to whether your ancestors might have had property, other than the family home. Directories are an invaluable source for all genealogists.

For the below directories, if my ancestors have only ever worked in one area that that is the area I will cover, but if they have worked over the country, or it's a small profession, then I'll try to cover as much of the country as I can.

The professions that I will be trying to cover are:

  • Tobacco Pipe Maker - Completed
  • Butcher - Completed for Liverpool
  • Joiner
  • Customs Officer
  • Waterman
  • Wheelwright
  • Gardener - In Progress
  • Taverns & Landlords - In Progress

If you would like me to cover an occupation then feel free to drop me a line using the Contact page or the Message Board

Further down the page you will find some material that might be useful in your research of your Family History. How to decipher the details on Census etc.

I have found a large collection of Latin related material on the Internet (thanks to the White Trash Scriptorium for making this available in the public domain)

Liverpool Poll Book of 1832

(Waiting for Permission to reproduce)

  • Description of the Poll Book
  • Votes from the Poll Book (17Mb Page)
The Poll Book for the election of members of Parliament for the Borough of Liverpool was one of many produced throughout the country in an apparent act of celebration of the emancipation the 1832 act had brought about. This went so far as to publish how each person voted, there being no attempt at secrecy as is the case today. From this, if you are lucky enough to find an ancestor listed, you will also be able to discover his political viewpoint. The Burgesses and Freemen are also identified in the Status column, (BGM/FMN).

I am grateful to Mr Martin Slater who transcribed and indexed the contents of this page, and also to the original Authors of the Poll Book, "The Worshipful Charles Horsfall Esq, Mayor, James Aspinall & Robertson Gladstone Esqrs. Bailiffs". Printed by J. & J. Mawdsley (Successors to J.Gore & Son) Castle Street, Liverpool, 1833.
