Investigating Irish
Ancestors is probably the most challenging of all the research
that you're ever going to have to do. I have done a fair bit
of digging whilst looking for my ancestors, and have written
down everything that I've come across.
This map should be
useful in showing the main counties within Ireland:

Griffith's Valuations (1848
- 1864) for the name of Carey
Griffith's Valuations
(1848 - 1864) for the name of O'Rourke |
Griffith's Valuation,
references approximately one million individuals who
occupied property in Ireland between 1848 and 1864. The
Griffith's Valuation, or Primary Valuation of Ireland, was
executed under the direction of Sir Richard Griffith to
determine the amount of tax each person should pay towards
the support of the poor within their poor law union. This
involved determining the value of all privately held lands
and buildings in rural as well as urban areas to figure
the rate at which each unit of property could be rented
year after year. The resulting survey was arranged by
barony and civil parish with an index to the townlands
appearing in each volume. The original volumes of the
survey are held in the National Archives, Dublin and
Public Record Office, Belfast. |
The following are from census
transcriptions, and any Birth, Marriage, or Death records that
I've found, borrowed or stolen. They are arranged in order of
County in Ireland. Each County has differing amount of
information for it, some only a census extract, others may
have that and some BMD information. Most of the documents are
in MS Word format.
Please note this is a
work in progress, I have some information on all the Counties
that are listed below, I just may not have had time to get
them onto the website as yet. Feel free to contact me using
the CONTACT page if there is a
County listed for which I haven't got around to yet.
